PI PRIDE: The Pi Pride Award recognizes those alumnae associations who, in addition to receiving the Excellence award, have demonstrated and additional level of exceptional service, chapter support, membership growth and involvement, fund-raising, or positive publicity for Alpha Delta Pi.

There are many more Alumnae Associations in our district that were deserving of awards, but usually one of two things prevented it: the Annual Report was not turned in on time and/or the Anniversary Fee was not paid. The Anniversary Fee is now a required fee. Our goal is to have all Alumnae Associations in the District receive an award in 2009!

Convention Updates

JOAN PERRY BOATRIGHT LOYALTY AWARD

The Joan Perry Boatright Alumnae Loyalty Award was established to recognize outstanding alumnae for their personal devotion and continued service to Alpha Delta Pi. This award is named in memory of Joan Perry Boatright, Alpha Beta Chapter, who served for six years as Grand Vice President of Alumnae.

Helen Anderson Pruitt,

Beta Epsilon

Convention announcement:

"Our District I honoree demonstrates the true meaning of lifetime loyalty to Alpha Delta Pi. Helen Anderson Pruitt, Beta Epsilon, was initiated at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina, in 1955. She was named best pledge and served as rush chairman for three years.

Helen’s service to Alpha Delta Pi on the international level was through the office of Province President. While volunteering as Province President, from 1978 to 1983, Helen was the driving force in the colonization and installation of three chapters: Zeta Zeta, Augusta College, Augusta, Georgia, Zeta Sigma, College of Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina, and Zeta Phi, Francis Marion University, Florence, South Carolina. She also assisted with the installation of Zeta Tau, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, South Carolina.

When asked to describe one of her favorite ADPi memories, Helen shared that it would be the times when she has had the privilege of working with chapters. Her most proud moment was her role in the establishment of an Alpha Delta Pi chapter at the College of Charleston. According to Helen, the idea of having a chapter at the College of Charleston was born during Beta Epsilon’s 50th anniversary. Being a woman of determination, less than one year later, Zeta Sigma was installed.

In honor of Helen’s work with Zeta Sigma, a special chapter award, known as the Helen Pruitt Chapter Excellence award, is named in Helen’s honor.

Today Helen still makes visits to Zeta Sigma whenever she can and has supported the Beta Epsilon housing program. Since her years as an international officer for Alpha Delta Pi, Helen has been active in her community.

Helen is a prime example of that part of our Creed that mentions the privilege of membership requires "confidence tempered with humility". When notified that she was receiving this honor, Helen exclaimed: "What little I’ve done…I’m overcome. This is the nicest thing that has ever happened to me!" When you ask any sister who knows Helen about her contribution to Alpha Delta Pi, she will say Helen is a sister who has given a lifetime of love and dedication to our sorority.

This fall Helen’s granddaughter may be attending the University of South Carolina. Helen has already told her granddaughter she needs to know only three Greek letters: Alpha Delta Pi.

Please join me in congratulating Helen Pruitt, District I’s Joan Perry Boatright Alumnae Loyalty Award honoree for 2007."

The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation

On Saturday of Grand Convention, we were given the opportunity to participate in self-defense training. It was PHENOMENAL!

The T.A.K.E. Defense Training program provides young girls and women with hands-on self defense training that is provided by the Ali Kemp Educational Foundation as part of their mission to develop comprehensive programs for safety awareness for women of all ages."

Ali Kemp was a Pi Beta Phi at the University of Kansas; her mother is an Alpha Delta Pi. She was murdered the summer after her freshman year at her job at a neighborhood swimming pool. Her parents founded The Ali Kemp Educational (TAKE) Foundation in her honor.

During our business meeting, we passed a resolution to recognize the TAKE Foundation as an important cause to support. It is absolutely free. They will come to your town and put on the training at no cost to you.

The T.A.K.E. Defense Training program provides young girls and women with hands-on self-defense where participants learn basic self-defense techniques that could save their lives. The program curriculum consists of 1) awareness education and 2) practical application of the skills demonstrated and learned in the session. The goal of the program is to build self-confidence and to empower its participants. Registering in pairs is recommended: mother/daughters or good friends are encouraged to sign up together.

Interested in bringing them to your town? Contact our future Alumna Initiate, Jill at:
