Fall 2008

New Tax Law and Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae Associations

Beginning in 2008, tax-exempt organizations, with gross receipts of $25,000 a year or

less will be required to remind the IRS of their tax-exempt status by filing a Form

990-N, Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations not Required

to File Form 990 or 990-EZ. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 added this filing

requirement to ensure that the IRS and potential donors have current information

about tax-exempt organizations.

The change impacts most Alpha Delta Pi alumnae associations as they will be

required to electronically submit a Form 990-N, also known as the e-Postcard, to the

IRS annually.

The following information is from the IRS Web site. For additional information

you are encouraged to visit the IRS Web site at irs.gov or call the IRS at (877) 829-

5500. The e-Postcard (Form 990-N) is available on the IRS Web site.

Annual Electronic Filing Requirement for Small Exempt

Organizations — Form 990-N (e-Postcard)

Due Date of the e-Postcard

The first e-Postcards are due in 2008 for tax years ending on or after December 31,

2007. The e-Postcard is due every year by the 15th day of the 5th month after the

close of your tax year. For example, if your tax year ended on December 31, 2007,

the e-Postcard is due May 15, 2008. You cannot file the e-Postcard until after

your tax year ends.

How To File

Click here to file the e-Postcard. When you do, you will leave the IRS site and file

the e-Postcard with the IRS through our trusted partner, Urban Institute. The form

must be completed and filed electronically. There is no paper form.

Information You Will Need To File the e-Postcard

The e-Postcard is easy to complete. All you need is the following information about

your organization. Click on any of the links below, if you need more information

about the item.

Employer identification number (EIN), also known as a Taxpayer

Identification Number (TIN)).

Legal name and mailing address

Any other names the organization uses

Name and address of a principal officer

Web site address if the organization has one

Confirmation that the organization’s annual gross receipts are normally

Who Must File

Alumnae associations with gross receipts that are

normally $25,000 or less must file the e-Postcard.

Associations with annual gross receipts that are

normally greater than $25,000 must file Form 990 or

Form 990-EZ;

Late Filing or Failure to File the e-Postcard

If you do not file the e-Postcard on time, the IRS

will send you a reminder notice but you will not be

assessed a penalty for late filing the e-Postcard.

However, an organization that fails to file required e-

Postcards (or information returns – Forms 990 or

990-EZ) for three consecutive years will

automatically lose its tax-exempt status. The

revocation of the organization’s tax-exempt status

will not take place until the filing due date of the

third year.

Connecting with our Newest Members

Dear AA Presidents:

Grand Council has announced a new program called Alumnae Collegiate Connection. The goal of

this program is to show our new members that being an ADPi extends beyond the college years

and instill the concept that when college is over the natural progression is to transition into an

alumnae association as an active member. Our strategy is to make alumnae and alumnae

associations more visible to those new members right from the beginning so they are viewed as vital

and important members of the organization. Each chapter Alumnae Relations Chair is being asked

to send a list of the new members in each state to all of the AA Presidents in that state. We would

then like each AA to send an email to the women from their areas congratulating them on pledging

Alpha Delta Pi and encouraging them to get in touch when they are back in town. Additionally, we

would like AAs to invite those new members to appropriate (no alcohol) events around the holidays

or during the summer months when members are more likely to be in town. If you have a Web

site, include that in your email so the new member can check it out.

Soon you will be receiving lists of women in your state from chapters. Please send out the

congratulatory emails in a timely fashion. It is our hope that this program will produce enthusiastic

new alumnae association members when these women graduate. Even if they don't move back

home, they will remember the positive experience they had with your association and thus be more

inclined to join the AA where they are living. Along these same lines, if there is a chapter in your

area, the Alumnae Relations Chair should be contacting you so that some joint events can be

planned.

To make this task easier, it is recommended that you create a boilerplate note that you can just cut

and paste into an email so you do not have to rewrite it every time - just add the new member's

name in the salutation. Even if your association is not very active, or a new member is from a small

town in your state, I urge you to send a welcoming email. That alone sends a powerful message to

that new member about the strength of our sisterhood.

This as a very positive step in the recruitment of new members for our Alumnae Associations and

we hope that you will be as enthusiastic as we are. Let your Alumnae Directors know if you have

any questions or concerns. Our contact information is on the last page.

Alumnae Association Service Fee Invoice

The Alumnae Association Service Fee Invoice is sent annually in October to all

alumnae association presidents via e-mail and to treasurers through the mail.

Payment is due every November. The invoice itemizes the annual fees required of

all alumnae associations. Late fees accrue every 30 days the payment is

outstanding.

Service/Anniversary Fees MUST be paid for your association to remain in

good standing with the International Organization.

Philanthropy

Lion’s Share Challenge

“Branding” Your Fundraising Events

Lion’s Share Challenge® is a brand name developed for Alpha Delta Pi sponsored chapter and alumnae fundraising events.

LSC should not be used for co-sponsored events. The purpose is to establish a signature Alpha Delta Pi event recognized by

everyone due to the Lion’s Share Challenge name and logo.

Your association may already have a successful annual fundraising event. You do not need to change the event to use the

LSC name and logo, only the event name. For instance, if the event is a golf tournament it could be called Lion’s Share

Challenge Golf Classic. Other ideas include: Lion’s Share Challenge Bowling Tournament, Lion’s Share Challenge Food

Drive, Lion’s Share Challenge Silent Auction, Lion’s Share Challenge Walk-A-Thon, Lion’s Share Challenge Spaghetti

Dinner, and so on.

Alpha Delta Pi is committed to philanthropy. Support of Alpha Delta Pi’s philanthropy program and an annual donation (sent

through the Foundation) to a charitable non-profit organization is required for the Excellence in Philanthropy Award given in

convention years to alumnae associations. For more information about Lion’s Share Challenge and our Philanthropy Manual

visit the Foundation section of the Web site at www.alphadeltpi.org.
